Longfellow Lion Pride

The reasons to be a proud Longfellow Lion are really quite endless. Our school really shines! Here are just a few examples from last month:

12657242_10207868803415106_3348804397701872888_o The Pasadena Outlook newspaper posted this article about our Family Fridays. Thanks to the leadership of our principal, Mrs. Ingber, our parents get to engage with their student’s classroom and teacher in ways that help us parents to better understand what our children are learning in the classroom.

Thank you also to our hard-working staff to make this happen, and to all the parents who take the time out of their busy morning to visit their student’s classroom. Dustin Bell with mom Cushon, as well as Emmeline Clougherty with mom Kristy are representing Longfellow here very well!

Longfellow is bustling with creativity after school in our LEARNs program! Site Coordinator, Haley Misner and her crew of Youth Leaders put together a wonderful Longfellow LEARNs Showcase on Thursday, January 21st. TK through 5th grade performed in the Longfellow auditorium.

Afterwards, parents had an opportunity to view the students’ artwork in the basement hallway – budding artists for sure! Bravo, LEARNs’ Students!

Then on Saturday, January 30th, Mrs. Fontenot’s 4th & 5th grade class received a standing ovation for their MLK choral reading at the Red, Black, and Green Honors celebration at the Pasadena Hilton. Our students received a standing ovation from a house full of dignitaries for their very soulful and powerful reading. You can witness for yourself on February 26th at the Student of the Month ceremonies.

Here us mighty Lions ROAR!

A New Year of Possibilities

Longfellow Volunteers are the BEST! We are looking to fill our 2016-2017 PTA Board – Be the CHANGE! We need YOU!

Happy New Year! Can I still say that on the 18th of January? I think so! I cannot believe that we are more than half way through the school year – summer will be here before we know it! Let’s try to slow down time a bit by reflecting on the end of 2015 (check out the main article of the January eNewsletter here) and planning ahead for just this week…

Join your Longfellow Family this Thursday, January 21st for several important events. First up, Longfellow LEARNs Winter Showcase:

File_000 (4)

This will be followed by a presentation of the 5th grade overnight field trip to Fort Tejon, by Private John Clagget, from 5:15 to 6:00 pm.

And then, the PTA’s January Meeting, where there will be a special presentation about Eliot and Washington Middle Schools. Light refreshments, childcare and Spanish translation will be provided. We will also discuss plans for Stargazing Night, general business, and the 201-2017 PTA Board Nomination Committee and open positions. One of the best ways to make a difference at Longfellow is to become a PTA Board Member. We are laid back (yet ambitious!) and fun group of people.

We are thankful.

I am full of thanks this Thanksgiving holiday, as I know you are too. There are many reasons to be thankful at Longfellow this year: our teachers are stellar and ambitious and determined; our staff is so very supportive and resourceful and flexible; our parents and caregivers are so very gracious with their time and support; and our STUDENTS are all SHINING STARS. Those students… if you volunteer any amount of time at Longfellow, you will know what I mean. They make me feel like a SUPER star.

I love these pictures that fellow parent, Vanessa Eades, took the other day. She totally captures the essence of each student.

Thank you, Vanessa, and thank you, Xochitl Martinez, for volunteering and providing a special art class that gave us this cherished moment in time.

Your Longfellow PTA strives to provide your students with as much extra enrichment as possible – special art classes, monarch studies, extra field trips, beautiful teaching gardens, fun community festivals, DJ dance parties, playground equipment, teacher supplies, and so much more. We can’t do it without your help.

Oooh, that last sentence gives up my motive, doesn’t it? Well, hey, this school by the mountains is worth it! One last request for the year 2015! Please consider the following ways in which you may help out your student and their school greatly:

  1. Buy one (or a few) Community Discount Cards

Community Discount CardThe cards are only $10 each. They pay for themselves after using them a few times, and are good for a full year. The cards not only help our school make money, and continue to provide field trips, programs and other incentives, but they also help you save. For every card we sell, the school keeps $5. It’s an easy fundraiser to be a part of! The deadline to purchase your cards is the morning of Friday, December 18th – don’t delay! Please contact Kayla at madonnaem@hotmail.com or (626) 677-8327 for cards.

  2.  Donate crayons and coloring books:

Our programs chair, Erika Aguilar, is currently requesting donations of coloring books and crayons to give to each child before the Winter Holiday Break.  This is similar to the book drive we did last year, where we provided a book to read for each child at Longfellow.  We will continue to take donations for the crayon and coloring book drive through December 12th.

  3. Join Your Friends at California Pizza Kitchen

    CPK Fundraiser

  4. Join the Auditorium Decorations Committee

  5. Join the Yearbook Committee

  6. Volunteer for Next Year’s PTA Board of Directors

Grateful for each of you,

Angie Uriu

Parent Reminders for What’s Left of September!

roomParent

Hopefully, you are checking our PTA calendar at http://www.ptalongfellow.org. OR you are keeping up to date with the school office reminders that go home in the Wednesday folder. But just in case you missed something…

Tomorrow! Thursday, 9/24 at 8:00 am – please join us in Room 113 for a Room Parent Training. Bring a friend and share the duties for your student’s classroom. Dads, Moms, Grandparents, caregivers – all are welcome! This is a great way to volunteer for working parents as it’s all about communication via phone, text, email and paper flyers – all tasks you can accomplish in the comforts of your home once the kids are in bed. Come find out how easy and fun it can be, and how rewarding it will be for you and your student. The Room Parent is really key to building a strong community spirit at our school.

Also Tomorrow! Thursday, 9/24 at 6:15 pm – please join us in Room 113 for our September PTA General Meeting. Childcare, light refreshments and Spanish translation will be provided. Our guest speaker, Milad Shokair, will talk about Infection Control. In addition to regular business, we will discuss the plans for the upcoming Fall Festival. Please come and share your ideas and/or let us know how you can help.

Friday, 9/25 at 7:50 am – Blacktop Coffee! THEN, starting at 3:00 pm and going until 9:00 pm – CHUCK E. CHEESE night!!! Chuck will donate 15% of the sales generated from this event to Longfellow PTA! This is one of our best community-building restaurant nights – Longfellow will probably fill the house, so don’t miss it! And it’s on a Friday Night! Bonus!!!

I hope to see you at one or all of the above events!

Go Lions!
